During the Wednesday, April 8th Chancellor’s Forum at UNCG, several images were shown of what the new Quad could look like.
Organizers emphasized that the images remained in the conceptual phase. Renderings depicted Classical Revival buildings in the same style as the existing 90-year-old Quad – with a grander scale and height that achieved the higher bed-count requested by campus administrators.
Some advocates for historic buildings would hope that a design solution involving an architectural recreation not be followed. If the Quad is destroyed for new housing, they reason, the campus would be better served to include buildings of this era instead of those that reflect architectural tastes of the early twentieth century. Authenticity is thought by some to strengthen the regard for historic preservation, and recreation of historic facades tends to dilute the value of historic places. In addition, new trends and technologies in terms of sustainable architecture and energy efficient design should be incorporated into new buildings whether they are located on the UNCG campus…or not.
What are the next steps in deciding the fate of the Quad? The Board of Trustees will consult with Chancellor Brady on the subject April 16, and a recommendation will be made to the Board of Trustees between April 17 and April 27.
The April 16th meeting will be held in the Joyner Room Cone Ballroom of the Elliott University Center from 3-4pm. Students, faculty, staff, and the public are invited to participate, but come early...speakers must sign in and the room is low seating capacity.
