Aficionados of modernism will have another day in the sun in Greensboro. The Gate City is developing a reputation as a center of modernism-appreciation in the southeast, due in part to programs such as "The Loewenstein Legacy" of 2005 and "Closer to Home: Edward Loewenstein & Modernism in Greensboro" of 2007. Both events were produced through partnerships between community foundations, UNCG, and Preservation Greensboro – and each raised awareness of modernist architecture in the city. Led by UNCG professor Patrick Lucas will focus on downtown Greensboro's best-preserved examples of modernism, ranging from the1949 Ellis-Stone Department Store by New York architectural firm Voorhees, Walker, Foley, and Smith; the 1960 Greensboro Public Library by Greensboro's own Edward Loewenstein; the 1971 First Union National Bank by the Raleigh firm Valand, Benzing & Associates Architects; the 1990 Cultural Center by Cambridge Seven Associates/J. Hyatt Hammond Associates; and the 1972 Governmental Plaza by Cambridge architect Eduardo Catalano. The Modernism in the Gate City tour is organized by DOCOMOMO US/North Carolina, the statewide chapter of DOCOMOMO dedicated to Non-profit organization devoted to the DOcumentation and COnservation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods of the MOdern MOvement. Held as part of DOCOMOMO US’s yearlong celebration of its 10th anniversary tours, the Gate City tour is one of twenty U.S. city tours showcasing our Modern architectural heritage across the nation. This celebration is the second national Modern Architecture Tour Day for host organization DOCOMOMO US.
